 value represents the gain level necessary to bring the echo from a reference

After the 

Ref B

 value is stored, the instrument displays a live D rating of any gated 

indication (see Figure 11-27 on page 185). This live D value, which represents the 
defect indication rating used with the published “AWS Acceptance - Rejection 
Criteria” tables, can be viewed in measurement reading box five (by default). You can 
set this measurement reading to display in any of the five boxes. For details on 
viewing and changing the measurement display setup, see “Measurement Setup 
Page” on page 44.
