• The IP address is a numeric value expressed in the form X.X.X.X where each X
is a byte, in decimal format from 0 to 255.
In a TCP/IP network, every host must have an unique IP address.
• In the WEB, IP addresses are assigned by the provider. In a home network,
IP addresses must be configured opportunely so that the devices of your home
dialogue correctly with each other and with the home router.
SUBNET MASK
• The possible combinations X.X.X.X of IP addresses would not be sufficient to
detect uniquely all the hosts of the immense internet network.
To overcome this limit, the subnet mask is necessary to define the extension of
the subnetwork, namely which IP addresses shall be part of the subnetwork.
• The subnet mask is a numeric value expressed in the form X.X.X.X where every
X is a byte, in decimal format from 0 to 255.
• To better understand its meaning, it is opportune to display it in binary format.
Example:
subnet mask 255.255.255.0 equates to 11111111.11111111.11111111.0000000
0 in binary form.
From the left, every ONE represents the part of the IP address which won’t be
able to change: all the hosts of the home subnetwork shall have that part of the
IP address, represented by 1 in the subnet mask, identical.
The ZEROS represent the bits which can change.
DEFAULT GATEWAY
• The default gateway represents the IP address of the device which allows to “exit”
from the subnetwork and to dialogue with other subnetworks.
• Normally, the default gateway is the IP address of the home router, literally “router”
which has the task of connecting the home subnetwork to the WEB.
• If a router is not present, set 0.0.0.0
SERVER DNS
• A DNS server acts as a “telephone directory” in the network and allows to assign
a name www to an IP address.
If a DNS server is not present, set 8.8.8.8
PING COMMAND
• The PING is a command useful to detect if a device can be reached in the TCP/
IP network.
• Every operating system, either for PC or for other network devices, which supports
TCP/IP implements this command.
• From operating system Windows10, on the icon START press the right key and
select RUN .
To check that Your SIOS CONTROL is connected to the home network, digit the
command PING 192.168.1.100 and press ENTER.
• 4 communication attempts will follow.
