BOOTP, with a certain IP address always assigned to
a certain device. Depending on the server, both meth-
ods may be used at the same time.
If the Network Print Server does not find a DHCP
server after two minutes, it will timeout and assume a
default address of 192.0.0.192. This follows current
BOOTP and RARP behavior.
If the Network Print Server receives multiple
responses, it will choose the first one.
When the Network Print Server receives an address, it
sends an ARP message once every second for five
seconds on the offered address to determine if
another device is using it. If the Network Print Server
finds another device is using the address, it will refuse
the address and start looking for a new address.
Static Route Entry
When the Network Print Server is powered on or reset
and no permanent IP address has been assigned, it
will attempt to obtain an IP address through Gleaning,
RARP, BOOTP or DHCP. If the Network Print Server

the IP address will default to 192.0.0.192. This IP
address should only be used temporarily to configure
a new, permanent IP address. To change to a perma-
nent IP address, the
route add
command is used to
place the Network Print Server product’s default IP
address into the workstation’s network routing table.
To use the route command, you must have Windows
