12. When the optimal gas setting has been attained, verify that the PFPD is close
to tick-tock by closing the fine adjust needle valve (clockwise) until the PFPD
just goes into tick-tock, as shown in Figure 5.3. In the tick-tock mode, only
every second flame propagates through the combustor. In WinPulse, this
results in a sulfur emission being observed only every second pulse. Chro-
matograms obtained during tick-tock will contain significantly higher noise.
Therefore, once the tick-tock mode has been obtained, open the fine adjust
needle valve one half turn from the tick-tock position.
Note:
With slower computers, it may be possible that only every alternate tick-
tock emission is observed.
13. Disconnect the permeation source from the injector or detector, and reconnect
the GC column to the injector or detector.
Note:
Optimization for phosphorus compounds is possible using the sulfur
optimization process. Follow the preceding procedure starting with step 9
and adjust for final optimization with either a higher Air 1 or lower hydro-
gen set point.
14. The pulse rate can be easily changed over a narrow range by adjusting the Air
2 flow rate. For a significant change of the PFPFD pulse rate, all the gas flow
rates need to be proportionally increased or decreased as the pulse rate
linearly depends on the total gas flow.
