Normal Engine Operation
Observe engine coolant temperature and engine
oil pressure. Temperatures and pressures will vary
between engines and with changing operating conditions,
temperatures, and loads. See GENERAL ENGINE
your engine.
If coolant temperature rises above the maximum coolant
engine. Unless temperature drops quickly, stop engine
and determine cause before resuming operation.
Operate the engine under a lighter load and at slower than
run engine at slow idle unless necessary for maneuvering
out of dock and harbor.
Stop engine immediately if there are any signs of part
failure. Symptoms that may be early signs of engine
problems are:
•
Sudden drop in oil pressure
•
Abnormal coolant temperatures
•
High marine gear oil temperature
•
Unusual noise or vibration
•
Sudden loss of power
•
Excessive black exhaust
•
Excessive fuel consumption
•
Excessive oil consumption
•
Fluid leaks
Break-In Service
The engine is ready for normal operation. However, extra
more satisfactory long-term engine performance and life.
DO NOT exceed 100 hours of operation with break-in
oil. See GENERAL ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS in

a longer break-in period may be required. In these
situations, an additional 100 hour break-in period is
recommended using a new change of Northern Lights

The engine is ready for normal operation. However, extra
care during the first 100 hours of operation will result in more
satisfactory long-term engine performance and life. DO NOT
exceed 100 hours of operation with break-in oil. See GENERAL
ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS in Specifications Section near end of
manual for oil pressure and coolant temperature specifications for
your engine.
1. This engine is filled with factory break in oil. Operate the engine
at heavy loads with minimal idling during the break in period.
2. If the engine has significant operating time at idle, constant
speeds and/or light load usage, or makeup oil required in the
first 100 hour period, a longer break-in period may be required.
In these situations, an additional 100 hour break-in period is
recommended using a new change of engine break in oil and a
new Northern Lights oil filter.
