Norstar VoIP Gateway Configuration Guide

•

Configure the Codecs according to network planning considerations. For best voice quality,
choose G.711 ulaw. For lowest bandwidth use, choose G.723. For a compromise of
performance and bandwidth, choose G.729.

Note that the Business Communications Manager does not does not allow you to select the
packetization rate when selecting the preferred codecs. For interoperability, the VoIP Gateway
must have the same codec choices and must select a packetization rate to match the Business
Communications Manager. The Business Communications Manager uses the following
packetization rates:

— G711: 20 msec

— G723: 30 msec

— G729: 20 msec

If silence compression is used on the Business Communications Manager, it should also be
used on the VoIP Gateway. Silence compression is set for the VoIP Gateway in “Advanced
Configuration / Channel Settings / Silence Compression = Enable”.

•

Jitter buffer settings are determined based on network analysis. For most installations select
Auto.

Remote Gateway

This section of Business Communications Manager is used to add entries for remote gateway
routing. Other Business Communications Manager routing must also be programmed as per
normal procedures. Business Communications Manager should be configured with an entry for
each VoIP Gateway as follows:

Name:

Descriptive name for the VoIP Gateway.

Destination IP:

IP Address for the VoIP Gateway.

Gateway Type:

In Business Communications Manager 3.5, choose Norstar VoIP Gateway.
In Business Communications Manager 3.0.1, choose Netmeeting.

Gateway Protocol:

None.

Destination Digits:

Destination numbers for that particular gateway.
