Line Backup 7-11
Set the Ping Host Name or IP Address to the router's Default Gateway, or other reliable IP address
elsewhere on the backbone – for example, a DNS ser ver. This will ensure that the router will initiate backup
connection on loss of Layer 3.
Note:
If you want the router to initiate the backup connection on loss of Layer 1 or 2 only (Physical or Data link
Layer), leave Ping Host Name or IP Address blank. Do
not
use 0.0.0.0 in this field. Hit the space bar or Delete
key to CLEAR the field totally. Leaving 0.0.0.0 in this field tells the router to ping an address that does not exist.
•
Select
Recovery to ADSL
and press Return. Choose either Manual or Automatic to determine how the
system will return to the primar y WAN link when it becomes available again. If you choose Automatic, the
next two menu items become visible.
Note:
Automatic recover y only works upon loss of primar y WAN connectivity.
•
If you chose Automatic Recover y, select
Requires Recovery of (minutes)
and enter the number of min-
utes that the system should wait before it assumes that a connection has been re-established. This
allows you to be sure that the primar y WAN connection is well re-established before the router
switches back to it from the backup mode. If the router's primar y connection fails at layer 1, the
Requires Recovery of (minutes)
parameter determines the amount of time the primar y layer 1 connec-
tion must be up (recovered) before the router will tear down the backup connection and rever t to the
primar y inter face.
•
You can toggle
Auto-Recovery on loss of Layer 2
to Yes or No (the default). This setting determines
whether the router should tr y to Auto-Recover when the backup is invoked because of a Layer 2 loss,
for example, a no valid Connection Profile. (Layer 1 is still available, and this is what recover y checks.)
Use this setting with caution. Setting it to Yes may induce alternating switching between Backup and
Recover y Mode. This field will determine the recover y behavior of a Manual backup and Ping failure
backup. These two failures are treated as Layer 2 failure.
• If
Auto-Recovery on loss of Layer 2
is set to
No
you will have to manually force recover y on the Pri-
mar y Inter face. The only exception to this is when failure occurs at Layer 1 (Physical Layer). In this
case, the router will auto recover even with
Auto-Recovery on loss of Layer 2
set to
No
because the
router will recover at the physical layer for which it failed.
• If
Auto-Recovery on loss of Layer 2
is set to
Yes
, and if the Data Link Protocol on the line is Frame
Relay with LMI (Local Management Inter face), and if the router stops receiving LMI signaling, the
router will fail at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) and rever t to backup mode. The router will then tear down
the backup connection ever y “x” minutes, where “x” equals the parameter set in the
Requires Recov-
ery of (minutes)
field.
• If
Auto-Recovery on loss of Layer 2
is set to
Yes
, and if the Data Link Protocol is PPP, and if the
Netopia stops receiving LCP echo responses from the upstream device, the router will fail at Layer 2
(Data Link Layer), and rever t to backup mode. The router will then tear down the backup connection
ever y “x” minutes, where “x” equals the parameter set in the Requires Recover y of (minutes) field.
• If
Auto-Recovery on loss of Layer 2
is set to
Yes
, and there is no LMI or LCP Echo on the line (i.e
RFC1483 or HDLC), then you must specify an IP address or host name in the Ping Host Name or IP
Address.
