Replacing disk shelf components
When a problem occurs with some disk shelf components, you can hot-swap them without
disrupting the storage system. Problems with other disk shelf components requires you to halt the
storage system.
Replacing SAS cables
You can replace SAS copper and optical cables for shelf-to-shelf and controller-to-shelf
connections (using the same SAS ports) if a cable has failed, if a different length cable is needed,
or if SAS optical cables are preferred instead of SAS copper cables. You can replace the cables
nondisruptively with some system configurations, but other configurations require you to halt your
system.

Your system must not be a MetroCluster system, which requires a different procedure,
depending on the type of MetroCluster system you have.

Your system cannot have any SAS cabling error messages.
You can download and run Active IQ Config Advisor to view any SAS cabling error messages
and the corrective actions you should take.

For FAS22xx systems:
◦
For FAS22xx HA pairs with external storage, the external storage must be cabled as
multipath HA.
◦
For FAS22xx single-controller configurations with external storage, the external storage
must be cabled as dual path (multipath).
•
Disk shelf (IOM), disk drive, and if applicable, ACP firmware should be current on all disk
shelves in your system before adding new disk shelves, shelf FRU components, or SAS cables.
The best practice is to always have the most current versions of firmware on your system.

Note: Do not revert firmware to a version that does not support the disk shelves, disk shelf
FRU components, or SAS cables in your system.
•
If you are using SAS optical cables or replacing one length of SAS copper cable for another,
you must have verified that your platform, disk shelf firmware, and version of Data ONTAP
that your system is running supports those cables.

About this task
•
Replacing a SAS cable means that you are replacing a cable using the same ports for a
controller-to-shelf or shelf-to-shelf connection.
•
Your system must be a multipath HA or single-controller-dual-path (multipath) configuration
to replace SAS cables nondisruptively.
If your system is a single-controller-single-path or single-controller-mixed-path configuration,
you must halt your system.
