outline font
A font that is stored as mathematical data
that can be used to generate many sizes from the same
representation. This is in contrast to a bitmapped font
which is stored as a pattern of dots. An outline font can
be scaled to any size. Also known as a scalable font.
output tray
The standard paper destination on the
Silentwriter 1760/1765. It can hold up to 250 sheets of
paper.
Page Protection
A setting that instructs the printer to
reserve enough memory to process an entire page before
it prints it out. Use this setting to avoid print overruns
that occur when printing very complicated pages.
paper cassette
The cassette that holds paper before it is
fed into the printer.
paper jam
Paper that is misfed and stops within the
printer. It must be cleared before the printer can
continue printing. See also: Jam Recovery.
parallel interface
An interface that uses multiple data
circuits. It is usually faster than serial ports and may
also support bidirectional communication between
devices. The parallel cable you use to connect your
computer to your Silentwriter 1760/1765 should be no
longer than 6 feet.
PCL
Printer Command Language. An escape code
printer language developed by Hewlett-Packard.
PCL 5e
A version of Hewlett-Packard’s Printer
Command Language—an escape code printer language.
PCL 5e is one of the printer languages emulated by the
Silentwriter 1760/1765. The other is PostScript Level 2,
which is a page description language.
PDL
Page Description Language. A printer language,
such as Adobe’s PostScript, that describes pages of text
and graphics.
peripheral device
Any device (such as a printer) that
you attach to and operate with your computer.
pitch
A unit for measuring type based on the number
of characters in one inch. Also known as cpi (characters
per inch).
PJL
Printer Job Language. A protocol developed by
Hewlett-Packard for controlling printers.
point
A unit of measurement for sizing type. One
point equals 1/72 inch.
port
A socket on the connector panel of a computer or
peripheral device where you can plug in a cable to
connect to another computer or device, or to a network.
portrait orientation
See orientation.
PostScript Level 2
A page description language
developed by Adobe that controls the placement of text
and graphics on a page. PostScript Level 2 is one of the
printer languages emulated by the Silentwriter 1760/
1765. The other is PCL 5e, which is a printer command
language.
Power Saving
A setting you use to control the amount
of power consumed by the printer.
PPD
PostScript Printer Description. A file that
contains configuration information about a specific
printer, such as the number of trays, acceptable paper
sizes, and resolution settings. This information is used
by PostScript printer drivers to process a print job.
print area
The region on a given paper size that can
actually be printed. Print areas are different for PCL and
PostScript print jobs.
