AES
Automatic Emulation Switching. A technology
that allows the Silentwriter 1760/1765 to assess
incoming print jobs and automatically switch to the
appropriate printing language—either
PostScript Level 2 emulation or PCL 5e emulation.
AIM
Automatic Interface Monitoring. A technology
that allows the Silentwriter 1765 to monitor all ports for
incoming print jobs.
alert message
A message on the printer operator panel
or in the Printer Monitor that occurs when printing is
suspended. See also: status message.
AppleTalk
A network protocol designed by Apple and
used to link Macintosh computers and peripherals.
application
A software program that performs a
specific task such as creating a spreadsheet, a text
document, or graphics.
ASCII
American Standard Code for Information
Interchange. This standard defines character set codes
that are used for data interchange between data
terminal equipment.
attributes
Characteristics of a font. These include
symbol set, spacing, pitch, point size, style, weight, and
typeface.
Auto Continue
A setting you use to specify how the
printer responds if it senses a paper size discrepancy,
memory overflow, or printer overrun.
Autoswitching
A setting that allows the printer to
detect and use the feeder that has the appropriate size
paper for the print job. Then, if the first paper feeder
runs out of paper, the printer will use the next feeder
with the same paper size, if one is available.
backup
A spare copy of a disk or a file stored on
another disk. Backing up your disks and files ensures
that you won’t lose information if the original is lost or
damaged.
baud
The rate of data transmission, measured in bits
per second.
bitmap
A dot-by-dot representation of a text character
or graphic image. See also: raster image.
bitmapped font
A font that is stored as a pattern of
dots. These fonts require a lot of memory because a
representation for each font size is stored. In contrast, an
outline font is stored as mathematical data. A single
representation of an outline font can be scaled to any
size.
cassette
See paper cassette.
cassette feeder
The mechanism that holds a paper
cassette and feeds paper into the printer.
Chooser
A desk accessory on the Macintosh system
you use to designate external resources such as file
servers and network printers.
click
To press and release the mouse button at the
location you want an action to take place.
