Major industry initiative introduces PIN authorisation on credit cards when pressing
the ‘Cr’ button.
A quicker way to pay is now available across Australia with the introduction of Personal
Identification Number (PIN) verification on most credit cards. Most credit and debit
cardholders can now choose to authorise their in-person transactions by using PIN
verification instead of a signature.
‘PEN or PIN’, a financial services industry initiative, has the potential to make payment
for goods and services in person faster and easier when using a credit or debit card.
Customers with PIN-enabled credit cards now have the choice of either verifying their retail
transactions with a signature (as usual) or entering their PIN into the PIN pad. All they need
to do is swipe or dip their card into the EFTPOS machine, press the ‘credit’ button, enter
their PIN and press the ‘OK/ENTER’ button.
Q: What happens if a credit card customer forgets their PIN?
A:
Ask them to sign for the transaction. Use the normal procedure of pressing the ‘credit’
button, then the ‘OK/ENTER’ button – if the transaction is approved, ask the customer
to sign the receipt.
Q: If a customer returns goods for a refund, does the customer need to enter their PIN?
A:
Refunds do not require the customer to use their PIN. You should follow your normal
procedure.
