Control Line
Ring coupling is controlled through the configuration of a single switch, the ring coupler. In the
figure, Switch A serves as the ring coupler, which manages the backup path from one of the rings.
Switch B is on the same ring and provides the main path between the two rings. Switch C is on the
other ring, providing the other end of the backup path.
On Switch A, two network ports are designated for ring coupling use: a coupling port and a
coupling control port. The coupling port is used for the backup path and connects to an extra
network port on Switch C. The coupling control port is used to monitor the status of the main path,
and connects to an extra network port on Switch B. With ring coupling established, Switch A can
activate the backup path as soon as it detects a problem with the main path.
ATTENTION
Ring coupling only needs to be enabled at the switch serving as the ring coupler. The ring
coupler must designate four separate ports as the two Turbo Ring ports, the coupling port, and
the coupling control port.
NOTE
Ring Coupling and Ring Master do not need to be set up on the same EDS-516A.
