As you begin to personalize your working environment, it is important to keep your body’s needs
in mind. Doing so will make your computer time more productive with less physical and mental
stress. This section offers some suggestions for setting up an effective work area.
Set ti ng Up Your Work station
•
Adjust your chair so that your feet rest on the floor. The backrest should offer firm support
for your back, especially your lower back.
•
Position your monitor so that it is 18 to 24 inches away from your eyes (longer distances
relax the eyes). The top of the monitor should be level with your eyes.
•
Place your keyboard at approximately elbow height. Wrists should be in a neutral position.
Keep your wrists straight and relaxed, and always operate the keyboard with a light touch.

Keep the mouse within easy reach, and alternate between using the mouse and keyboard.

Maintain a relaxed posture.

Avoid excessive reaching when you are working at your computer. Supplies should be
within easy reach.

Use your whole arm to move the mouse.
•
Minimize hand and elbow contact with hard or sharp surfaces.
