Starting, Shifting, and Stopping
!
WARNING
Vapors can ignite and cause an explosion, resulting in engine damage or severe personal injury. Do not use volatile starting
aids such as ether, propane, or gasoline in the engine air intake system.
!
WARNING
Fuel vapors trapped in the engine compartment may be an irritant, cause difficulty breathing, or may ignite resulting in a fire
or explosion. Always ventilate the engine compartment before servicing the power package.
Before Starting the Engine
NOTICE
Without sufficient cooling water, the engine, the water pump, and other components will overheat and suffer damage. Provide
a sufficient supply of water to the water inlets during operation.
IMPORTANT: Observe the following before starting:
•
Verify the seawater inlet valve (or seacock) is open.
•
Never operate the starter motor longer than 15 seconds at a time to avoid overheating the starter motor. If the engine does
not start, wait one minute to allow the starter motor to cool; then, repeat the starting procedure.
•
Ensure that the engine crankcase is filled to the correct level with the specified engine oil. Refer to
Section 4
‑
Specifications
‑
Engine Oil
.
•
Ensure all electrical connections are secure.
•
Check all items listed in
Section 5
‑
Maintenance Schedules
.
•
Perform any other necessary procedures as indicated by your dealer or Mercury Diesel authorized repair facility.
Starting a Cold Engine
NOTE: Check the fluid levels before starting the engine. Refer to
Section 5
‑
Maintenance
.
1. Turn the engine compartment bilge blower (if equipped) on and run for five minutes. Alternately, open the engine hatch to
air out the bilge before attempting to start the engine.
2. Place the control handle in neutral.
3. Turn the ignition key to the on position.
a. Preheat is activated at key‑on when the air temperature or coolant temperature is below 10 °C (50 °F). When starting
the engine in temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F), wait the specified amount of pre‑heat time before turning the key
switch to the start position.
NOTE: If battery voltage is low, the grid heater may not activate to conserve the available charge. This may cause
increased cranking time and additional exhaust smoke.

NOTE: Do not significantly exceed the specified preheat time, as the intake air will begin to cool after the grid heater
shuts off. Cycle the key switch off, then back on to reactivate preheat.
b. An optional wait‑to‑start light can be installed to provide a visual indication of the engine preheat time prior to starting.
This will ensure the least amount of cranking and will minimize exhaust smoke during cold weather starting. Contact
an authorized Mercury Diesel repair facility for more information.
4. Turn the ignition key switch to the start position then release.
IMPORTANT: Engine oil pressure should exceed 69 kPa (10 psi) within seconds of starting the engine. Stop the engine if
the engine oil pressure does not meet this specification. Locate and correct the problem. If you are unable to correct the
problem, see a Mercury Diesel authorized repair facility.
5. Verify that all instrumentation is functioning properly and indicating normal readings.
