R
Observe the notes on the cross-country ABS
(
/
page 179).
R
Before driving off-road, shift the transfer
case to the LOW RANGE off-road gear
(
/
page 159).
R
Engage the differential locks if necessary
(
/
page 161).
In LOW RANGE off-road gear or with the differ‐
ential locks engaged, the vehicle switches to G-
mode (
/
page 152).
In LOW RANGE off-road gear, you can shift from
h
to
k
and from
i
to
k
without having to
depress the brake pedal. This can help you, for
example, when rocking your vehicle out of a rut
("rocking free").
R
Always keep the engine running and in gear
when driving on downhill gradients and
slopes. Observe the notes on driving in
mountainous terrain.
R
Do not drive on unknown terrain that is not
easily visible and stay on marked routes.
R
Always keep the doors and windows closed
while the vehicle is in motion.
R
Deactivate Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC, cruise control and the variable
limiter.
R
Adapt your driving style to the terrain.
R
Do not use the HOLD function on steep
downhill or uphill gradients with slippery or
loose surfaces.
Driving on sand
When driving on sand, also observe the following
instructions:
R
Switch to the Desert drive program (availabil‐
ity depending on country) (
/
page 151).
R
Shift to a lower gear.
R
Drive quickly to overcome the rolling resist‐
ance, otherwise the vehicle may dig itself in.
R
Drive in the tracks of other vehicles if possi‐
ble. Make sure that the following prerequi‐
sites are met:
-
the tyre ruts are not too deep
-
the sand is firm enough
-
the ground clearance is sufficient
R
Lower the tyre pressure in all four wheels.
Contrary to the information on the tyre pres‐
sure plate (fuel filler flap), you can lower the
tyre pressure to 120 kPa (1.2 bar/17.4 psi).
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: observe the notes in
the Supplement. Otherwise, you may fail to rec‐
ognise dangers.
%
Once you stop driving on sand, immediately
increase the tyre pressure again.
Information on the recommended tyre pres‐
sure for the vehicle's factory-fitted tyres can
be found on the tyre pressure table on the
inside of the fuel filler flap (
/
page 410).
Fording
Also observe the following information when
fording:
R
Drive at no more than 10 km/h.
R
Observe the maximum permissible fording
depth (
/
page 438).
R
Switch off automatic climate control
(
/
page 133).
R
Vehicles with stationary heater/ventila‐
tion: switch the stationary heater/ventilation
off (
/
page 135).
