ABS (A ntilock Brake S ystem )
The A B S p re v e n ts th e w h e e ls fro m
lo c k in g up above a v e h ic le sp e e d o f
a p p ro x im a te ly 3 k m /h (2 m ph) in d e ­
p e n d e n t o f road s u rfa c e c o n d itio n s . It
is ne cessa ry, ho w e ver, th a t th e v e h i­
cle spe ed rea che s at le ast 8 k m /h
(5 m ph) b e fo re c o m m e n c in g to brake.
A t th e in s ta n t on e o f th e w h e e ls is
a b o u t to lo c k up, you w ill feel a s lig h t
p u ls a tio n in th e b ra ke pedal, in d ic a t­
ing th a t th e A B S is in th e re g u la tin g
m ode.
On s lip p e ry road s u rfa c e s , th e A B S
w ill re s p o n d even w ith o n ly s lig h t
brake pedal p re s s u re . The p u ls a tin g
bra ke pedal can be an in d ic a tio n o f
h a zard ous road c o n d itio n s , and it
fu n c tio n s as a re m in d e r to ta k e extra
care w h ile driving.
The A B S in d ic a to r lam p in th e in s tru ­
m e n t c lu s te r c o m e s on w ith th e key in
s te e rin g lo c k p o s itio n 2 and s h o u ld
g o o u t w ith th e e n gine run ning.
If th e c h a rg in g v o lta g e fa lls b e lo w
10 vo lts , th e in d ic a to r lam p c o m e s on
and th e A B S is s w itc h e d off. W hen
th e v o lta g e is ab ove th is value again,
th e in d ic a to r lam p s h o u ld g o o u t and
th e A B S w ill be op e ra tio n a l.
If th e A B S in d ic a to r lam p d o e s n o t go
o u t o r c o m e s on w h ile d riv in g , it in d i­
ca te s th a t th e A B S has d e te c te d a
m a lfu n c tio n and has s w itc h e d off. In
th is case, th e b ra ke sy s te m fu n c tio n s
in th e usual m anner, b u t w ith o u t a n ti­
lo c k a s s is ta n c e . W e re c o m m e n d th a t
y ou v is it an a u th o riz e d M E R C E D E S -
BENZ d e a le r as s o o n as p o s s ib le to
have th e s y s te m c h e c k e d .

W hen th e m in im u m m ark on th e
re s e rv o ir is re a ch e d , have th e brake
s y s te m c h e c k e d (fo r b ra ke pad th ic k ­
ne ss and leaks).

ke y in s te e rin g lo c k to p o s itio n 2. The
b ra ke w a rn in g lam p c o m e s on, and
s h o u ld g o o u t w h e n th e e n gine is ru n ­
ning.

Even th e ABS cann o t preven t the
natural law s of physics from a c t­
ing on th e vehicle. The ABS ca n ­
not preven t accid en ts, including
th o s e resulting from ex cessive
sp eed in turns, follow ing an o th e r
vehicle to o closely, or aq u a p la n ­
ing. Only a safe, a tte n tiv e , and
skillful driver can preven t a c c i­
