Jum p S tarting
If th e b a tte ry is d is c h a rg e d th e en gine
can be s ta rte d w ith ju m p e r c a b le s and
th e (12 V) b a tte ry o f a n o th e r veh icle .
P ro ce e d as fo llo w s :
1. P o s itio n th e v e h ic le w ith th e
c h a rg e d b a tte ry s o th a t th e ju m ­
p e r c a b le s w ill reach, b u t ne ver let
th e v e h ic le s to u c h . M ake sure the
ju m p e r c a b le s d o n o t have lo ose
o r m is s in g in sula tion .
2. On b o th v e h ic le s :
• Turn o ff e n gine and all lig h ts
and a c c e s s o rie s , e x c e p t
hazard fla s h e rs o r w o rk lig h ts.
• A p p ly p a rkin g bra ke and s h ift
s e le c to r lever to p o s itio n “ P ” .
• Be sure th e b a tte ry v e n t cap s
are tig h t. Place a da m p c lo th
o v e r th e v e n t cap s, m aking
c e rta in it is c le a r o f all m oving
parts.
3. Clam p o n e end o f th e firs t ju m p e r
cab le to th e p o s itiv e ( + ) te rm in a l
on th e d is c h a rg e d b a tte ry and th e
o th e r end to the p o s itiv e ( + ) te r ­
m inal on th e c h a rg e d b a tte ry.
M ake sure th e ca b le c la m p s do
no t to u c h any o th e r m etal parts.
4. C lam p one end o f th e s e c o n d ju m p ­
er ca b le to th e g ro u n d e d ne gative
( — ) te rm in a l o f th e ch a rg e d b a t­
te ry and th e fina l c o n n e c tio n to a
g ro u n d e d heavy m etal b ra c k e t in
th e e n gine c o m p a rtm e n t o r on th e
e n g in e o f th e d is a b le d vehicle.
M ake s u re th e c a b le s are n o t on
o r near pu lle ys, fans, o r o th e r
p a rts th a t w ill m ove w h e n th e
en gine is sta rte d .
5. S ta rt e n g in e o f th e v e h ic le w ith th e
c h a rg e d b a tte ry and run at high
idle. T hen s ta rt e n gine o f th e d is ­
ab le d v e h ic le in th e usual m anner.
6. A fte r th e e n gine has s ta rte d ,
rem o ve ju m p e r c a b le s by re v e rs ­
ing th e ab o ve in s ta lla tio n s e ­
q u e n c e e xa ctly, s ta rtin g w ith the
ju m p e r c a b le c o n n e c te d to a
heavy m etal b ra c k e t in th e d is ­
abled v e h ic le ’s e n gine c o m p a rt­
m ent. W hen re m o v in g each clam p,
m ake sure th a t it d o e s n o t to u c h
any o th e r m etal w h ile th e o th e r
end is s till atta c h e d .

A d is c h a rg e d b a tte ry can fre e z e at
ap p ro x . — 10 ° C ( + 1 4 °F ). In th a t
case it m u s t be th a w e d o u t b e fo re
ju m p e r c a b le s are used.
