The BERT-20E1 offers ten operating modes. Modes of operation are
selected by using the up/down arrow keys located under the MODE
section of the instrument’s upper panel.
NORM –Normal Mode
In the NORM mode the receiver and transmitter are manually configured
for frame, pattern and line code via their respective up/down arrow
keys in the default/results menu.
The transmitter setup menu is not available in this mode of operation.
The transmitter settings will be coupled to that of the receiver.
AUTO – Automatic Detection Mode
This mode allows the user to originate a 2.048 Mbps signal and BERT.
The Transmitter and Receiver are independent. The receiver is always in
the automatic detection mode looking for framing, pattern and line code.
The transmitter can be set up by pressing the TRANSMITTER SETUP key.
The operator will know they are in the transmitter setup menu because
the green LED located next to the transmitter setup button will
illuminate and the text "TX SETUP MENU" will appear on the first line of
the LCD.
Fx56 – Fractional E1 (Nx56) Mode
This mode allows the user to test in a Fractional E1 environment. Only 7
bits of data are available in each timeslot. The receiver and transmitter
are manually configured for frame, pattern and line code via their
respective up/down arrow keys in the default/results menu.
The transmitter setup menu is not available when operating in this
mode. The channels are configured by selecting AUX function 03 in the
auxiliary menu (AUX).
Fx64 – Fractional E1 (Nx64) Mode
This mode allows the user to test in a fractional E1 environment. The
full 8-bits of data are available in each time slot. The receiver and
transmitter are manually configured for frame, pattern and line code via
their respective up/down arrow keys in the default/results menu.
The transmitter setup menu is not available when operating in this
mode. The channels are configured by selecting AUX function 03 in the
auxiliary menu (AUX).
D/I – Half Duplex Drop and Insert
This mode allows the user to drop an individual time slot to the speaker
and receiver BERT engine. At the same time, either pattern data or a
tone may be inserted into the out-going channel. The other 31 channels
of the frame are left undisturbed. The receiver and transmitter are
manually configured for frame and line code via their respective
up/down arrow keys in the default/results menu. The PATTERN
up/down arrow keys select either an IDLE or INSRT condition.
The drop channel is selected via the TS/CHANNEL select keys on the
front panel. The transmitter setup menu selects the desired insertion data
channel and whether pattern data or analog tone (frequency/level) is
inserted into the channel.
TONE – Tone Insertion Mode
This mode allows the user to insert fixed frequencies of 404 Hz, 1004 Hz
and 2804 Hz, or swept tones from +3 dB to -50 dB. The receiver and
transmitter are manually configured for frame and line code via their
respective up/down arrow keys in the default/results menu. The
PATTERN up/down arrow keys select either an IDLE or INSRT condition.
The frequency, level and insert channel is selected via the transmitter
setup menu.
