DEFECT INFORMATION REPORT
1. Manufacturer: Mazda Motor Corporation
2. Description of the Defect: Recall Surveillance tests performed
by EPA found some MY-1982 and 1983 Mazda RX-7's to be in non-
compliance of Federal exhaust emission standards for HC and CO.
Mazda's investigation determined the non-compliance to be due to
excessively-rich air fuel mixture and premature deterioration of
the vehicle's catalyst.
3. Class or Category of Vehicles Potentially Affected:
1982-83 Mazda RX-7 (Federally Certified Vehicle)
4.1. Number of Vehicles Estimated to Have the Defect: The number
of vehicles that have the problem identified in (2) above is
estimated to be 91,112 units in accordance with manufacturer's
production records.
4.2 Production Plants: Mazda Motor Corporation
3-1 Shinchi, Fuchu-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima,
Japan
5. Evaluation of Emissions Impact and Description of Driveability
Problems: The defect may cause noncompliance with Federal
emission standards for unburned hydrocarbons and carbon
monoxide. The defect has no effect on driveability.
