MAGNUM INDUSTRIAL MI-91350 DELUXE 14" WOOD BAND SAW
BLADE TENSION
Blade tension affects both the performance of your band saw
and the service life of its blade. A properly tensioned blade
lasts longer and is less likely to break prematurely. If the blade
is too loose, it can drift while cutting. If the blade is too tight, it
can have trouble making smaller radius cuts.
Generally, a more tension will deliver better results when using
wider blades, re-sawing taller stock, making straight cuts or
wide sweeping curves. When working with narrower blades,
sawing shorter stock and making tighter curved cuts, less
tension is usually ideal.
ADJUSTING BLADE TENSION
The Magnum Industrial MI-91350 band saw features a
BLADE
TENSION SCALE (A)
, which you can use to reference ideal
tension settings for various blade widths. It also has a quick-
release
TENSION LEVER (B)
. See Figure 37.
To adjust blade tension, first turn off your saw and unplug the
power cord. Make sure there is enough clearance between the
blade and the bearing assemblies. (See page 11.) Then follow
these steps:
1. Check the
BLADE TENSION SCALE (A)
to see that the
tension level corresponds to the width of the blade on the
saw. Engaging the
TENSION LEVER (B)
with an over-
tensioned blade could damage the mechanism.
2. Pull the
TENSION LEVER (B)
down.
3. Referring to the
BLADE TENSION SCALE (A)
, set the
blade tension according to the width of the blade. Adjust the tension by turning the
BLADE
TENSION KNOB (C).
Turn clockwise to increase tension and counter-clockwise to decrease
tension.
4. Press against the side of the blade to check the tension. Typically, the blade should flex
between 1/4" and 3/8". See Figure 38.
5. Make a test cut on a scrap piece of wood and readjust the blade tension as needed.

WARNING!
To avoid injury, ensure the power switch is OFF and the power cord is unplugged before adjusting the band saw.
When the band saw is ideal for periods longer than 24 hours, release the
TENSION LEVER (B)
to remove tension from
the blade. This prevents the blade from forming to the wheels, which can weaken and damage the blade.
