1.7 Overview of the risks
1.7.1 Laser radiation

In the normal operation the machine meets Laser Class 1
with fully enclosed laser beam. All enclosures must be in
place.
The CO
2
laser beam has a wavelength of 10.6 µm and is
invisible. If the operator must stare at the machining beam
over an extended period, anti-glare filter glasses should be
worn. The Fanuc Laser C Series have also a diode laser beam. The diode laser beam is
visible (red colour) and low power. It is used to ensure that the CO
2
beam is correctly
positioned on your work piece. This diode laser beam is not considered harmful to the
skin. But staring a long time into the diode laser beam can harm the eyes.

In service mode, the machine corresponds to Laser Class 4, with laser beam as well as
diffused radiation. The direct and reflected laser beam and diffuse radiation can cause
damage to the eyes and skin. Mark the laser operating area clearly. Cover reflecting
objects or move them aside. Keep inflammable objects away and make sure that no
explosive solvent vapours may form. Remove inflammable items and avoid the
formation of explosive solvent vapours. Wear always protective glasses.

The direct laser beam may cause severe injury to any part of the body ! Never expose
yourself to direct laser radiation. Never look directly in the He-Ne laser beam.

From the design point of view, protection against direct laser radiation is obtained by
assembling all the optical elements in a fixed position and allowing movement along
the axes only. Do not alter the way in which the optical elements are fixed.

Avoid exposing your eyes and skin to reflected and diffuse radiation. Only wear laser
safety glasses when working in service mode.

Only maintenance people are allowed to stay with the machine to test and maintain the
laser beam.
1.7.2 Electrical Hazards

Work on electrical systems or equipment must be carried out by a qualified electrician
or appropriately trained personnel supervised by a qualified
electrician, in compliance with the rules of Electro technical
practice.

All parts on which inspection, maintenance or repair work
is performed must be de-energized. Check that the
disconnected parts are in fact at zero-voltage, earth them
and short-circuit them as well as insulate the adjacent parts with tension.

Use original fuses only, suitable for the prescribed amperage. In case of malfunction,
switch the machine off immediately.

Periodically inspect the electrical equipment. All defects, such as charred cables and
loose cables must be immediately repaired.

In case of interventions on parts with tension, call a second person who can, if
necessary, operate the emergency shut down or the main switch. Mark off the area
with a red-and-white safety chain and a warning sign. Use electrically insulated tools
only.
