Operation
3 Operation
The compressor unit is mainly operated via 3 buttons:
The SELECT button allows to scroll through the display.
3.1 Switching on
Caution
Do not run the compressor unit for more
than a few seconds without having connec-
ted the flexlines and the cold head. Opera-
tion without flexlines and cold head may
damage the compressor unit.
Open the coolant supply.
Switch on the main switch.
The display reads
VERSION: Vx.xx
and
SYSTEM OFF
Press the ON button. The following message appears:
SYSTEM ON
The compressor unit starts up together with the cold
head, possibly with a few seconds delay. This start delay
protects the compressor unit from being restarted imme-
diately after being shut down.
The bypass valve may whistle during start-up until the
cold head has reached a temperature below 250 K. This
is no problem.
Use the SELECT button to switch the display to the ope-
rating hours meter:
Hours 00005
3.2 Normal operation
During operation, check the operating pressure and the
coolant flow rate at regular intervals (at least every 6
months).
Refer to Sections 1.3 and 2.4 for nominal values.
If the helium pressure is too low during operation, switch
off the compressor unit and find the cause; refer to Sec-
tion “Troubleshooting”.
If the coolant flow rate is insufficient, eliminate potential
malfunctions in the water supply or at the water outlet. If
deposits of calcium or grime have collected in the heat
exchanger, switch off the compressor unit and inform the
Leybold Service Department.
Warning
The line joining the compressor unit and the
cold head may be connected or disconnec-
ted only after the compressor unit has been
switched off and separated from the line
supply. Electrical shock hazard! Moreover,
the compressor unit and the cold head
could be damaged. Neither should the line
plug ever be disconnected while the com-
pressor unit is running.
Before every change of operating mode (buttons /
REMOTE / RS 232) it is necessary to first switch off the
compressor unit and the cold head while in the "old” ope-
rating mode and then to switch on again in the "new”
operating mode. Failure to observe this rule may result
in undefined operating states; see Section 2.5, "Operati-
on via the interfaces.”
Safety devices are integrated into the compressor unit to
protect the device during operation; refer to the table in
Section 1 for details.
