Hydraulic Operation - Cutter Bars (Adjust Flotation)
Cutter bar flotation is controlled by the amount of oil present in the accumulator
when cutter bars are on the ground. More oil in the accumulator further
compresses the nitrogen gas, which in turn will provide greater pressure in the
rod end of cutter bar lift cylinder and pressure gauge line. Higher pressure
results in cutter bars exerting less ground force and vice versa.

. Operator fully opens valve

, then moves hydraulic control to raise cutter bars. Oil flows as follows:
•
From tractor to rod end of pitch control cylinder
•
From tractor to rod end of take-up cylinder
•
From tractor to base end of take-up cylinder
Step 1:
Take-up cylinder extends due to greater force exerted on base end of
piston.
Step 2:
Pitch control cylinder retracts.
Step 3:
Oil flows to accumulator, cutter bar lift cylinder, and pressure gauge.
Step 4:
When pressure of the nitrogen gas and oil inside the accumulator exceeds pressure required to
raise cutter bars, cutter bar lift cylinder will retract and cutter bars will raise.
Step 5:
When cutter bars are fully raised, oil flows into accumulator until pressure of nitrogen gas equals
tractor relief pressure setting. Maximum amount of oil is now in the circuit.
Step 6:
Operator moves tractor hydraulic control to NEUTRAL, closes valve

, and moves hydraulic
control to FLOAT position.
Step 7:
Operator gradually opens valve

. This returns excess oil to tractor and reduces accumulator
pressure until desired flotation setting is achieved, at which point valve

is closed to resume
normal operation.
