Chapter 2: ADC-6880 Analog to AES/EBU Digital Audio Converter

Sampling Reference Selection Switch

SW3

is an edge-mounted, three-position toggle switch that controls the

source of the sampling reference signal. This switch allows the sampling
reference source to be switched between

Internal

,

External

or

Auto

mode. The internal sampling rate can be switched between 44.1 kHz and
48 kHz

(see

Figure 2-4).

Placing

SW3

in the

Internal

mode position forces the ADC-6880 to use

one of the internal crystal oscillators as a sampling reference. Depending
on the setting of the sampling frequency selection switch (

SW2

), the

ADC-6880 will sample at 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz, and will not be locked to
any external sources. This mode is referred to as

internal sampling

or

free

run mode.

The auto setting allows the ADC-6880 to look for, and lock to, an
external reference signal present on the external reference input. If no
signal is present, or if the signal becomes unusable, the ADC-6880 will
automatically switch to internal

Reference

mode. When the external

reference signal is present and usable, the ADC-6880 will automatically
switch back to external

Sampling

mode and will be locked to the external

reference signal.

The external setting forces the ADC-6880 to lock to the external
reference only. If there is no external reference present, or if it becomes
unusable, the ADC-6880 will stop sampling audio data until the external
reference is restored.

The sampling reference selection switch can be changed during
operation of the ADC-6880. The unit does not have to be powered down
to change this switch setting.

Sampling Frequency Selection Switch

The sampling frequency selection switch determines which internal
sampling reference the ADC-6880 will use when it is in

Internal

mode.

When in the 48 kHz position, the sampling rate will be 48 kHz.

When in the 44.1 kHz position, the sampling rate will be 44.1 kHz.

When the ADC-6880 is locked to an external reference, this switch will
have no effect.
