11. Trouble Shooting

Problem

Incident Light Interference Contrast

No incident light interference contrast is pos-
sible.

Cause/Remedy



The specimen is too thick or too thin.



The embedding medium or specimen are of bi-

refringent material. Rotate the specimen.



The difference in the refractive indices of the

specimen and the embedding medium is too
small.



The cover glass is too thick.



Bring the polarizer and analyzer into cross po-

sition until they reach maximum darkness (with-
out specimen)
(



Check to ensure that the correct prism has

been inserted into the prism slot on the objective
turret, e.g. with the NPLAN

for 5x and 10x,

for

20x, 50x and 100x.
