Shear Bolts and Plugging
If the hammer mill experiences too high of a load, shear bolts on the driveshaft
flange will break. This is to protect the mill from excessive stress and premature
part failure. If this should happen follow these steps:
1. Shut off the grain supply to the mill.
2. Close the hopper door if the hopper contains grain.
3. Lift and move the mill to a suitable location and remove the wing nuts and
bottom clean out door (right figure). Shut off the tractor and clear all the
grain from inside the mill.
4. Remove the rear shaft cover/shield to expose the rear hex shaft. Use the
slug wrench to turn the drum and finish cleaning out the mill.
5. Unhook the driveshaft from the tractor and replace the (2) broken shear
bolts. Extra shear bolts are located on the top 3
- point arm mount.
6. Put mill back together and reposition. Start mill again, bring to 1000 rpm
THEN open hopper door.
NOTE: SHEAR BOLTS ARE 3/8” x 1” GRADE 5 HEX BOLTS
