Understanding RAID
9.4. JBOD
Just a Bunch of Disks
JBOD, or Just a Bunch of Disks, is not a numbered
RAID level. However, it is similar because it is an Array
of Inexpensive Disks. The process takes multiple drives
and combines them into a single virtual drive without
redundancy. The disks are strung together, end to end.
JBOD is similar to the opposite of partitioning.
While partitioning creates two of more logical drives
out of one physical drive, JBOD uses two or more physi-
cal drives to make one logical drive.
Storage capacity of determined by adding the ca-
pacities of the individual physical drives. Thus a JBOD
array could combine a 3 GB, 15 GB, and 5.5 GB, physi-
cal drives into a 23.5 GB logical drive. A JBOD array
can be figured using hubs or a daisy chain.
