DRIVE CHAIN FOR THE UPPER ROLLS (FC 4000 R / RG)
a) Checking the chain for wear :
1 - First check for correct roll gap. See page 30, “Adjusting Conditioning Intensity.”
2 - Rotate upper roll back and forth by hand. If the lugs of the upper roll contact lugs on lower roll in
both directions, the chain needs to be replaced. Note: there are two sets of rolls on this machine
to check and adjust.
b) To replace the chain :
1 - Remove the chain cover (6) and check it and
the rubber seal for any damage. Replace if
necessary.
2 - Lock the roll drives by placing a block of wood
between two cutterbar discs.
3 - Remove bolt and washer (newer machines) or
spanner nut (older machines) (1), and bolt (2)
on lower sprocket.
4 - With lower span of chain tight, mark (A) the end
of the lower shaft and its sprocket, also the upper
sprocket (4) and its shaft as well as the support
casting (B). This will give a good starting point
for roll timing.
5 - Slide the lower sprocket (3) off then the upper
sprocket (4) along with the chain (5) off the
shafts.
6 - Clean out the old grease from chain cover and
drive area.
7 - Put the two sprockets inside the new chain, and
preferably with the lower span of the chain tight,
align marks (A & B) and slide both sprockets
and chain onto the shafts. Make sure the closed
end of the master link clip is leading in direction
of normal chain movement.
8 - Check roll timing with lower span of chain
tight. Remove wood block from cutterbar, and
carefully turn the cutterbar and rolls to check at
several locations. Lugs of the upper roll
should be centered within lugs of lower roll
with lower span of the chain tight. If they are
not, remove the lower sprocket and re-in-
dex it on the shaft to a new location. This
process may need to be repeated a number of
times to find the best roll timing.
9 - Install sprocket hardware and tighten. Lower roll
bolt and upper sprocket bolt- 155 ft.lbs. Upper
spanner nut (older units)- 200 ft.lbs.
10 -Fill chain cover (6) with one cartridge of grease and reinstall. Tighten cover bolts to 45 ft.lbs.
C) Checking and adjusting roll timing:
1 - First check for correct roll gap. See page 30, “Adjusting Conditioning Intensity.”
2 - Carefully turn the cutterbar and rolls to check roll timing at several locations. Lugs of the upper
roll should be centered within lugs of lower roll with lower span of the chain tight. (Top of
upper roll pulled toward the rear of machine).
3 - To adjust timing, see above section “B) To replace chain” and use as a guide.
