m e n t , c a r e f u l l y follow i n s t r u c t i o n s s t a t e d by t h e t e s t e r m a n u f a c t u r e r .
A c a i l c a n b e c h e c k e d f o r o p e n s with a s i m p l e t e s t l a m p .
T o t e s t f o r a n open p r i m a r y winding,
c o n n e c t the two t e s t p o i n t s t o the p r i m a r y t e r m i n a l s - - t h e l a m p will not l i g h t if the c i r c u i t i s g r o u n d e d .
T o c h e c k t h e s e c o n d a r y c i r c u i t , c o n n e c t one t e s t point t o the high t e n s i o n t e r m i n a l a n d the o t h e r
point
e i t h e r of t h e p r i m a r y t e r m i n a l s .
In t h i s c a s e , t h e l a m p will not light but tiny s p a r k s should be
noted a s the t e s t p o i n t s
a r e rubbed a c r o s s the t e r m i n a l s . If t h e s e c o n d a r y i s o p e n e d , no s p a r k s will
o c c u r .
If
the t e s t s s h o w that t h e p r i m a r y o r
i s o p e n , r e p l a c e c o i l o r t e s t f u r t h e r with the
c a i l t e s t e r .
CONDENSER
If the c o n d e n s e r s h o r t s o u t , the c o i l will be unable t o p r o d u c e output voltage.
On the o t h e r h a n d ,
if it o p e n s o r d e c r e a s e s i n c a p a c i t a n c e , the output voltage will b e g r e a t l y r e d u c e d a n d the ignition
p o i n t s will b u r n e x c e s s i v e l y . If badly b u r n e d b r e a k e r p o i n t s o c c u r too f r e q u e n t l y , the condition of the
c o n d e n s e r should b e s u s p e c t e d . If c o n d e n s e r h a s too s m a l l c a p a c i t a n c e , m e t a l will t r a n s f e r f r o m the
s t a t i o n a r y c o n t a c t t o t h e m o v a b l e c o n t a c t . If c a p a c i t a n c e i s too l a r g e , the m e t a l will build up on the
c o n t a c t .
The c o n d e n s e r c a n
b e t e s t e d with a n o h m m e t e r o r a c o m m e r c i a l c o n d e n s e r t e s t e r . T o c h e c k
with the
r e m o v e the c o n d e n s e r t h e n c o n n e c t l e a d s b e t w e e n the c o n d e n s e r l e a d and a good
on the e n g i n e . At f i r s t ,
a
low r e s i s t a n c e should b e i n d i c a t e d ; h o w e v e r , t h i s should v e r y quickly
r i s e
to a high value.
If low r e s i s t a n c e i s i n d i c a t e d c o n t i n u o u s l y , t h e c o n d e n s e r i s d e f i n i t e l y f a u l t y a n d
m u s t he r e p l a c e d .
