WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ALARM SOUNDS
SMOKE ALARM ACTIVATION
Smoke alarm pattern is three long beeps repeating
every 1.5 seconds.
The smoke alarm takes precedence when both smoke
and carbon monoxide are present.
•Alertsmallchildreninthehomeaswellasanyoneelsethatmight
havedifficultyrecognizingtheimportanceofthealarmsounding
orthatmighthavedifficultyleavingtheareawithouthelp.
•Leaveimmediatelybyyourescapeplan.Everysecondcounts,so
don’twastetimegettingdressedorpickingupvaluables.
•Inleaving,don’topenanyinsidedoorwithoutfirstfeelingits
surface.Ifhot,orifyouseesmokeseepingthroughcracks,don’t
openthatdoor!Instead,useyouralternateexit.Iftheinsideof
thedooriscool,placeyourshoulderagainstit,openitslightly
andbereadytoslamitshutifheatandsmokerushin.
•Stayclosetotheflooriftheairissmoky.Breatheshallowly
throughacloth,wetifpossible.
•Onceoutside,gotoyourselectedmeetingplaceandmakesure
everyoneisthere.
•Callthefiredepartmentfromyourneighbor’shome-notfrom
yours!
•Don’treturntoyourhomeuntilthefireofficialssaythatitisall
righttodoso.
•Therearesituationswhereasmokealarmmaynotbeeffective
toprotectagainstfireasstatedintheNFPAStandard72.For
instance:
a)smokinginbed
b)leavingchildrenhomealone
c)cleaningwithflammableliquids,suchasgasoline
•Iftheescaperouterequiresyoutogothroughsmoke,crawllow
underthesmokewheretheairisclearer.
