J/70 TECHNICAL BULLETIN
January 15, 2013
To: J Boats Dealers
J/70 “Hoistable” Furler Swivels
We have recently learned that several forestays
supplied amongst the first (20-30) J/70’s may have
“hoistable” furler swivels that were installed upside-
down. This is not a problem that could cause a
major failure, but it could cause extra friction in the
furler system on those boats.
The top photo at right shows the hoistable swivel
near the top of a new forestay.
The swivel should be installed with the split ring,
(see arrow at right), on its upward side.
Note: There are two swivels in the furler system. A
second swivel is installed between the top of the
forestay and the T-fitting that connects to the mast.
Both swivels should be installed with their split
rings upward.
Any owner/boat with an inverted swivel installed on the forestay can obtain a replacement forestay at
no charge through Rig Pro, in Portsmouth, RI, or at the Rig Pro trailer at Key West Race Week.
For Rig Pro in Portsmouth, contact Mattie Fails (401) 683-6966, or
.
At Key West, the Rig Pro trailer will be located at the Westin Hotel (adjacent to Truman Annex)
starting Thursday, January 17th. The contact in Key West will be Brian Fisher, at (401) 855- 0721 or
. Rig Pro will also have a stock of spare J/70 standing rigging,
bowsprits, and spare mast/boom parts on site.
