5-6 Norand

6920 Communications Server Reference Manual

Formatting Upload Data by Computer

The Export Process places the data from each handĆheld

computer exchange into a separate output file. These files

are named UPL00001.DAT, UPL00002.DAT,

UPL00003.DAT, etc. They are sequentially numbered

based on the order that the upload data was received.

There is no connection between the upload file sequence

number and the portable computer identification number.

There are four basic types of data that might be uploaded

into the 6920 Communications Server." All data files reĆ

quire a PL/N header to classify the file as to type:

Fixed Record Size File:

This type of data file contains records that are of fixed

length. The format for each record is defined in the

PL/N header that precedes the data.

Variable Length Record File:

This type of data file is also called a transaction file.

The PL/N header has a reserved form of 00000" for

the record count and a PIC field of X001". This speĆ

cial form indicates to the exporter that the informaĆ

tion needed to format this data is contained in the

UPLFMT.CTL file. Each record is preceded with a reĆ

cord descriptor character. Associated with each record

descriptor character is a format definition.

DEX Audit Trail:

DEX audit trail data is contained in a PL/N data file

that only has one record. The data is formatted into

logical records based on rules that define the DEX

data. This data can be left in the formatted output

file or it can be relocated into a common DEX file deĆ

fined in the Export Data page under System ProperĆ

ties. The PL/N name for the DEX audit trail is located

in the UPLFMT.CTL file.
