15. An chosen anchorage point at an existing construction in Germany should at least be suitable for a load of
9 kN, as evidenced by the applicable technical building regulations.
16. All persons involved in the rescue operation, should be secured against falling and ensure the a permanent
possibility of communication to the rescued person (eg direct or indirect visual or radio contact). If the fall
protection device with the personal fall protection systems occur the requirement of the attachment point
should be increased according to the technical rules. In the scope of the ANSI/ASSE standards, for fall
protection, the requirements to the attachment point for the fall protection equipment according to ANSI/
ASSE Z359.1 ( 22,2 kN) are to be complied with and should be independent from the attachment point of the
technical rescue equipment.
17. The ABS 3a W / 3a WH Favorite is an automatically acting descender devices for rescue. During the
descenting process heat is produced by friction. Components of the devices which needs to be touched during
the descenting process do not heat up over 48°C. other components are significantly warmer (pic. 10). Always
wear protection clothing to avoid burns (pic. 11).
18. A controlled descenting process is essential, as in loss of control it can be very difficult to regaining
19. Do not descent above hazardous material, obstacles, live constructions or mobile machine components
without observing the required safety distances , pic. 12.
20. The descent rope is connected to the full body harness of the injured person by using an appropriate
anchorage (pic.13). „Slack rope “ between person and the attachment point should be avoided. Safety
harnesses according to EN 361/ ANSI/ASSE Z359.1 or rescue harnesses according to EN 1497 ANSI/ASSE
Z359.4 are permitted for use of the descenting device. The user instruction of the safety harness should be
observed.
21. Weather influences, e.g. strong wind and technical conditions, as well as the weight of the free-hanging in
running rope can affect the descenting process negatively.
Application
22.
For the ABS 3a WH:
Perform a function check as described in item 4 (pic. 14). Use the connector to connect
the rescue device to the attachment point. The carabiner of the outgoing rope is connected to the ring or fall
arrest D-ring of the victim‘s harness. Use the lift function to lift the victim until the fall arrest is released. To do
this, use the switching bolt to turn the backstop on in the „Lift“ direction. The victim is subsequently lifted until
the fall arrest is released by turning the hand wheel in the lift direction.
The nominal lifting capacity is 140 kg, minimum capacity is 50 kg, the maximum lifting height is 75 m. Release
the fall arrest of the victim and begin descenting as follows: Turn the hand wheel in the „Lift“ direction until the
backstop is released. Hold the hand wheel. Press the switching bolt into the „free running“ position. Now start
descenting slowly. The device can be slowed down either by holding the hand wheel or by holding on to the
upward running rope . Additional holding force can be achieved when descenting by redirecting the upward
running rope via the hooks and fairlead of the roping rescue device. The descenting length should be free of
obstacles. The rope should prope rly run in the descender.
23.
Evacuation of a single person using the ABS 3a W / ABS 3a WH:
Perform a function check as described
in item 4. The user slings the carabiner of the outgoing rope as vertically as possible over his head to a
suitable attachment point. The descender‘s connector is connected to the D-ring (see the harness instructions)
(pic 15). Pull the rope tight, throw the rope bag down (be careful not to endanger anyone) or carry it on your
harness. Place the incoming rope over the pulley and hold. Make sure that all carabiners are locked. The user
gets into the descenting position. Now unhook the fall arrest and slowly starting descenting (open hand until
the rope starts to slip.
Attention
: There is a risk of burns, wear suitable protective gloves!). Make sure that the rope runs prope rly
out of the bag and into the device. Open your hand completely and the machine brakes automatically.
The descenting speed is 1.5 m/s.
24.
Evacuation of several persons using the ABS 3a W / ABS 3a WH:
Perform a function check as described
in item 4. Sling the device as vertically as possible over the user. Connect the carabiner of the outgoing rope
to the ring or fall arrest D-ring of the harness (see the harness instructions). Pull the rope taut, throw the rope
bag down (be careful not to endanger anyone) or set it safely aside. Make sure that the rope runs prope rly
into the device. Once the first person has reached the ground, unhook the descent rope from the harnesses
D-ring. The opposing rope now becomes the descenting/descent rope and the procedure is repeated. The
device does not have to be switched.
25.
Rescue by carrying the device:
Sometimes it may be necessary for a rescuer to rappel to an injured person
(Figure 15 + 16). In this case, the rescuer hooks the ABS 3a WH-type descender devices for rescue onto
the chest D-ring of his EN 361 and EN 813, ANSI/ASSE Z359.1 fall arrest harness. The carabiner of the
outgoing rope is connected to the respective attachment point. The rope bag is thrown down (be careful not
to endanger anyone) or carried on the harness. The rescuer now gets himself into the descenting position.
Once more, carefully checks whether safe descenting is possible. He then releases his fall protection and then
