Apply an indicator dye to stain and differentiate the sapwood from the heartwood.
Depending upon the pH of the sapwood
,
different dyes may be required.
As an example Methyl Orange works well with many Eucalyptus species as it turns
the sapwood yellow and the heartwood a deep red colour. Now use a ruler or
callipers to precisely measure the radial depth of sapwood.
