Chapter 1. Introduction
The IBM 5196 TotalStorage Network Attached Storage 300G (Model G00) allows
you to easily attach storage to your network. Because the Model G00 is an
appliance, you do not need to know the internal workings of its operating system.
The appliance performs only one specialized job, so all the complex software
needed to handle other applications does not exist in it.
The appliance is comprised of hardware and software that allows any system to
access files through the network fabric by making requests to the appliance. The
appliance parses the requests, locates the files in its pool of storage devices, and
then sends a response to the requestor. To accelerate access to recently used data,
the appliance caches that information within its memory. Caching increases the
throughput of the Model G00.
Because the Model G00is a modular, single-use appliance, it has a specifically
defined hardware and software configuration. The preloaded software stack is
based on the Windows Powered OS operating system, which is very similar to
