Compatibility:
The xSeries 440 contains licensed system
programs that include set configuration, set features, and
test programs.
IBM system BIOS is loaded from a
“flash” EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides
instructions and interfaces designed to support the
standard features of the xSeries 440 and to maintain
compatibility with many current software programs.

and non-IBM devices, adapters, software, and network
operating systems supported with xSeries servers, visit:

Contact your IBM representative, IBM Business Partner,
or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the
compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries
servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new
features and options are announced that support these
servers.
Limitations
•
These xSeries 440 entry models contain either two or
four Xeon processors.
SMP upgrades should be
performed as follows:
−
Two-way models to four-way Xeon processors
—
Add an optional xSeries SMP Expansion Module
with Dual Xeon Processors 2.4 GHz/512 KB
(71P7919) and a minimum of 2 GB of system
memory.
−
Upgrades to eight-way require installation of
Xeon MP processor options.
•
To perform upgrades using Xeon MP processors:
−
Xeon MP processors must be of the same type and
clock speed
—
Mixing processors of different
speeds or cache sizes is not supported.
−
From two- or four-way Xeon to eight-way Xeon MP
—
Upgrades to Xeon MP processors to less than
eight-way are not generally recommended
9
.
−
The standard SMP expansion module must be fully
populated with four processors before installing an
xSeries SMP Expansion Module with four Xeon MP
processor options, or populating a second existing
SMP module with four Xeon MP processors.
•
These xSeries 440 servers contain one or two standard
SMP expansion modules (model dependent) with 16
DIMM sockets each. A maximum of 16 GB of system
memory per SMP expansion module is supported by
adding a 1 GB PC133 ECC SDRAM RDIMM in each of
the 16 DIMM sockets.
An optional xSeries SMP
Expansion Module can be installed in the model 3RY
to support additional processors and another 16 DIMM
sockets for a total system memory capacity of 32 GB.
All supported system memory is addressable through
direct memory access (DMA).
•
The xSeries 440 supports 512 MB and 1 GB, 3.3-volt,
133 MHz, 72-bit ECC SDRAM, Registered Dual In-line
Memory Modules (RDIMMs). Supported RDIMMs can
coexist in the same server; however, due to four-way
interleaving, memory RDIMMs of the same capacity
must be installed in matched sets of four. Refer to the
Planning Information
section or the xSeries server Web
page memory options.
•
The two 1050-watt power supplies standard with
xSeries 440 produce the full 1050-watt power rating
when connected to 220 V ac power sources.
When
connected to 110 V ac, they produce 550 watts of
power for system use. This power may be insufficient
to provide n+n redundancy in full configurations. For
this reason, xSeries 440 should be connected to
220-watt power sources.
•
Use the version of ServerGuide that is shipped with
the system, or a later version, to load software and
drivers.
Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be
compatible with the server.
9
The above upgrade path has been tested and is
recommended by IBM.
Other SMP configurations using
Xeon MP processors are possible (such as a 5 way) and
could be supported.
Refer to the
Software Requirements
section for operating
system limitations.
Planning Information
Customer Responsibilities:
The xSeries 440 models and
options are designated as customer setup.
Customer
setup instructions are shipped with the systems.
Configuration Information
Bay Configuration
The xSeries 440 contains four drive bays on the lower
front side of the server.
The bottom two, side-by-side
bays contain the standard CD-ROM and 1.44 MB diskette
drive. Two 3.5-inch, SCA-2 compliant, slim-high, hot-swap
drive bays are located above these two bays.
The IDE CD-ROM is cabled directly to the IDE port. The
two hot-swap bays are connected to the integrated
Ultra160 SCSI controller through a 16-bit LVDS cable.
Internal SCSI Cabling
An optional ServeRAID
controller is supported for
internal RAID applications. A separate 16-bit LVDS cable
is included with the system to attach the hot-swap
backplane to the ServeRAID controller.
External SCSI Cabling
The Ultra160 SCSI controller contains a second channel
that supports external SCSI devices.
The controller is
connected to an external, industry-standard, .8 mm very
high density connector interface (VHDCI) through a 16-bit
LVDS cable.
