Product Positioning
The xSeries 440 server is positioned as the flagship of
xSeries IA-32 products.
Its advanced function and
multiprocessor SMP capability using high-performance
Xeon or Xeon MP processors, expands your choices for:
•
Consolidating server applications such as:
−
Database
−
E-mail and collaboration
•
Requiring an advanced platform for complex,
mission-critical applications such as enterprise
resource planning (ERP)
•
Expanding e-business applications such as:
−
Customer relationship management (CRM)
−
Business intelligence
−
Web hosting
These entry models are an affordable way to enter the
highly scalable xSeries 440 line powered by Enterprise
X-Architecture technology.
Start out with two-way or
four-way SMP models and as your requirements grow, so
can your server with eight-way and beyond Xeon MP
processing power.
These models are positioned above
the xSeries 360 due to increased memory capacity,
scalability, and advanced processor subsystem
architecture.
Numerous Enterprise X-Architecture design points
significantly
enhance
performance and reliability, making
the xSeries 440 server ideal for advanced, mission-critical
applications. Mainframe-inspired features include:
•
XceL4 Server Accelerator Cache
•
Active Memory with Chipkill ECC support
—
Supports
memory mirroring
•
Memory ProteXion
—
Redundant bit steering similar to
hot-spare on DIMM
•
RXE expansion port
—
Industry-first remote I/O
expansion
•
Copper-based IBM XA-32 core logic chipset
The xSeries 440 server is designed for extremely
complex, compute-intensive applications requiring
multi-processing power and large memory support.
It
provides excellent scalability with models supporting
2.4 GHz Xeon processors and 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 GHz Xeon
MP processors, high-speed memory, and PCI-X bus
architecture.
It can support tremendous I/O capability
through the addition of an optionally available RXE-100
Remote Expansion Enclosure. This makes the xSeries 440
server an excellent fit for today and future enterprise
e-business applications through pay-as-you-grow
XpandOnDemand scalability.
These high-density, Xeon-based servers are engineered
to handle complex applications requiring high-speed
computing power, OnForever high-availability functions,
and a minimum amount of rack space.
Applications
include:
•
e-business
•
Business intelligence
•
Database and transaction processing
•
Enterprise resource planning (ERP)
•
Groupware and e-mail server

When referring to hard drive or tape backup capacity, GB
stands for one billion bytes.
Total user capacity may vary
depending on operating environments.
2
Actual playback speed will vary and is often less than the
maximum possible.
3
GHz and MHz denote the internal and/or external clock
speed of the microprocessor only, not application
performance. Many factors affect application performance.
