SYNCHRONIZATION
Synchronization is a process enabling a device, personal computer or server to be updated,
with minimal user intervention, so that the end result is that the documents, emails, tasks,
calendar items, favorites or multimedia stored on one machine are the same, and the same
versions, as stored on another machine.

In this Chapter, we will look at some common use cases:
(i) I want my device to be able to access the Internet by connecting my device to a PC that has Internet connection.
(ii) I want to keep my Outlook content on my device up-to-date with my company’s Exchange server, receiving and
sending Outlook email at my device.
(iii) I want to synchronize certain information held on my device with information stored on my PC.
(iv) I want to synchronize ringtones, music and videos on my PC with my device.
(i) I want my device to be able to access the Internet by connecting my device to a
PC that has an Internet connection
For connectivity to the Internet, your device can use 3G, GPRS or Wi-Fi provided that coverage is
available. As an alternative to those methods of connection, you may wish to connect the device
indirectly via a PC that has Internet access, using either a USB cable or Bluetooth technology.
The PC needs to have had ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) software
installed as described at the end of this chapter.ActiveSync automatically installs the device
drivers enabling a Windows Mobile-based Device to be recognized by the PC.
NOTE FOR WINDWOS XP USERS: The latest version of Activesync is available for installation on the Getting
Started Disc that came with your device. We recommend you run a minimum version of Activesync 4.5 for
compatibility with your device.
NOTE FOR WINDOWS VISTA: Upon connecting the device, Windows Vista users will be prompted to
download Windows Mobile Device Centre software and do not require ActiveSync on their PC.
