Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening
If the cylinder head head gasket, tightening bolt and/or cylinder block are
replaced with new one, tighten the cylinder head bolts as follows;
Break-in procedure:
1. Clean the bolts and threaded hole of the cylinder block.
2. Apply Honda Ultra S9 oil to the cylinder head bolts threads and seating sur-
face.
3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque in numerical order as
noted in the illustration.
4. Retighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque in numerical order
as noted in the illustration.
Torque: 20 N•m (2.0 kgf•m, 14 lbf•ft)
5. Further tighten the cylinder head bolts 53 degrees in numerical order.
6. Further tighten the cylinder head bolts 53 degrees in numerical order again.
7. Loosen and remove the cylinder head bolts.
Final tightening procedure:
1. Clean the bolts and threaded hole of the cylinder block.
2. Apply Honda Ultra S9 oil to the cylinder head bolts threads and seating sur-
face.
3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque in numerical order as
noted in the illustration.
4. Retighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque in numerical order
as noted in the illustration.
Torque: 20 N•m (2.0 kgf•m, 14 lbf•ft)
5. Further tighten the cylinder head bolts 53 degrees in numerical order.
6. Further tighten the cylinder head bolts 53 degrees in numerical order

Measure the valve timing.
Recommended valve timing:
Intake Opens 22˚ BTDC
Close 58˚ ABDC
Exhaust Opens 53˚ BBDC
Close 22˚ ATDC
Do not set the overlap beyond the recommended values, so the valve may be
touch to the piston head. Be careful not to the touch the valve to the piston
head when adjusting the valve timing.
Tighten the cam sprocket bolts to the specified torque.
Torque: 22 N•m (2.2 kgf•m, 14 lbf•ft)
Measure the piston and valve clearance and make sure the clearance is over
the minimum values.
Piston and valve clearance (minimum):
IN: 1.2 mm
EX: 1.4 mm
The measured values are below the minimum values, adjust the valve timing
so that the clearance is over the minimum values.
Example:
If the intake valve and piston clearance is 1.1 mm, adjust the valve timing as
noted below, and recheck the valve and piston clearance.
Intake Opens 22˚ BTDC to 21˚ BTDC
Close 58˚ ABDC to 59˚ ABDC
Exhaust Opens 53˚ BTDC to 54˚ BTDC
Close 22˚ ABDC to 21˚ ABDC
