fi
ts, features, and requirements of
the Distributed File System solution in Windows Server 2003 R2.
File Server Management Console
The File Server Management (FSM) snap-in provides a centralized tool for managing your
fi
le server. A
fi
le server provides a central location on your network where you can store and share
fi
les with users
across your network. Using the FSM snap-in, you can perform many
fi
le server management tasks, such
as formatting volumes, creating shares, defragmenting volumes, creating and managing shares, setting
quota limits, creating storage utilization reports, replicating data to and from the
fi
le server, managing
Storage Area Networks (SANs), and sharing
fi
les with UNIX and Macintosh systems.
Storage Manager for SANs
The Storage Manager for SANs (also called Simple SAN) snap-in enables you to create and manage the
LUNs that are used to allocate space on storage arrays. Storage Manager for SANs can be used on
SANs that support Virtual Disk Server (VDS). It can be used in both Fibre Channel and iSCSI environments.
For more information on Storage Manager for SANs, refer to the online Help. A Microsoft document

Single Instance Storage
Single Instance Storage (SIS) provides a copy-on-write link between multiple
fi
les. Disk space is recovered
by reducing the amount of redundant data stored on a server. If a user has two
fi
les sharing disk storage
by using SIS, and someone modi
fi
es one of the
fi
les, users of the other
fi
les do not see the changes. The
underlying shared disk storage that backs SIS links is maintained by the system and is only deleted if
