process can perform a requested opera-
tion on the file (such as opening a file for
writing). Access permissions can be
changed by the chmod(1) command.
fileset A logically-defined, named set
of files on an update or installation tape.
file system The organization of files
on a given storage device, possibly in-
cluding hierarchical directories.
$HOME The value of the environment
variable representing the ++home direc-
tory++.
home directory The directory name
given by the value of the shell variable
HOME. This is the directory where the
user starts after logging in, typically /us-
ers/login, where login is your login
name.
host name Refers to a string which
uniquely identifies a system in a net-
work. There are generally different
++host name++ domains associated with
different networks.

HP-IB Hewlett-Packard Interface Bus
(IEEE 488 standard).
HP-UX cluster A group of worksta-
tions connected via a LAN. One comput-
er, the ++cluster +, performs as a
file-system server for the ++cluster cli-
ent++.
IPL Initial Program Loader (such as
the ISL program).
ISL Initial System Loader. This imple-
ments the operating-system independent
portion of the boot process.
kernel The part of the HP-UX operating
system that manages the computer’s re-
sources, such as memory, file system,
and input/output.
Korn Shell An HP-UX shell, featuring
command history recall and line-editing.
Invoked as /bin/ksh.
LAN See Local Area Network.
LED Light-emitting diode.
Local Area Network The systems
and/or clusters which share data, hard-
ware, and software resources via Net-
working Services software.
locally-mounted file system A file
system mounted on a disk attached to a
cluster client and shared by other nodes
in the cluster.
login Your login name, the name by
which you are known to the workstation.
This may be any group of characters, so
long as it meets system rules.
mother board The vertical system
backplane board into which the ++sys-
tem board++ plugs.
mount To add an auxiliary (removable)
file system to an active existing file sys-
tem.
