What is the HP Protected Partition?
Selected Business PCs released from May 2002 will be delivered with a special hard disk
partition, called the HP Protected Partition for e-Diagtools. This partition contains a full
working version of e-Diagtools and, when created, the Support Ticket.
This hard disk partition is created using special techniques so that it remains invisible
from operating systems, protecting it from deletion.
Properties of the HP Protected Partition
The HP Protected Partition:

Occupies little disk space (32 MB).
•
Does not affect normal PC use. It is completely invisible to the user from Windows and
DOS operating systems.

Cannot be viewed or deleted using the operating system tools or other standard
partitioning utilities. Furthermore, HP tools for the previously used
HP Utility
Partition
(such as the HP Utility Partition Restoration Tool) are not compatible with
the HP Protected Partition.

Is a PARTIES (Protected Area Run Time Interface Extension Services) partition that
uses the IDE ATA/ATAPI5 standard. This means that the partition is physically
located at the end of the hard disk, with its own MBR (Master Boot Record) at the
very end. Also, the logical end of the hard disk is moved to just before the start of this
partition. This renders the partition invisible and protected.
NOTE If a SCSI hard disk is used, the HP Protected Partition uses a structure very similar to
PARTIES except that it is not protected from deletion using ordinary disk partition tools.
