Troubleshooting Modem
Table 2-5 lists the common modem error messages, their causes, and describes how to troubleshoot
modem connections.

Edit /usr/lib/uucp/devices to include an
entry for the /dev/culnpp file created
earlier. For example, add the following
entries in the /dev/culnpp:ACU cul2p5 -
2400 hayesDirect cul2p5 - 2400 direct The /usr/lib/uucp/devices file is not
setup correctly. NO DEVICES AVAILABLE
If the modem is not in use, remove the
lock file and try again. A lock file exists in the /usr/spool/uucp
directory. DEVICE LOCKED
Check the /dev directory for the port’s
existence, ownership, and permissions. The dial-out port cannot be opened. CAN’T ACCESS DEVICE
System Crashes or Panics
The system may crash after installing the MUX cards. Table 2-6 describes the cause of this problem,
and also describes how to troubleshoot this problem.
