5.9 Maintenance of the Cooling-Lubricant Unit
Maintenance
Regularly check the concentration, bacteria count,
pH-value and solids content of the emulsion.
Appropriate measuring instruments (refractrometers,
emulsion test equipment, bacteria count indicators,
indicator paper) are availble, e.g. from the lubricant
suppliers.
You should only add anti-foaming agents, corrosion
prevention agents, or germicide after consulting the
lubricant supplier.
Changing the Cooling-Lubricant
• Clean the machine to remove dirt and swarf.
• Use the cooling-lubricant pump to pump
the used cooling-lubricant into a suitable,
sufficiently large container.
• Open the maintenance door on the side of
the machine and lift the cooling-lubricant’s
submersible pump upwards.
• Pull the empty cooling-lubricant container out.
• Clean the container thoroughly to remove
sediments, dirt and swarf.
• Clean the cooling-lubricant system with a
neutral cleaning agent.
Observe the manufacturer’s instructions!
• Dispose of the used cooling-lubricant in line with the
valid environmental protection regulations. Please
also note our following directions.
• Fill with new cooling-lubricant.
Disposal of Cooling-Lubricant
Water-soluble cooling-lubricant that can no longer be
used is normally disposed of by authorized waste
disposal services. Ask your lubricant supplier.
Cooling-lubricant emulsions can be disposed
of by waste oil disposal companies. There is
a charge for this service.
Petrol stations or garages are places to ask for the
addresses of such companies locally.
In Germany, emulsions with at least 4% oil
content (by weight) are subject to the law on
waste oil - emulsions with lower oil contents
to the law on general wastes.
Dealing with Cooling-Lubricants
The aggressive components in cooling-lubricants
can cause allergies and skin problems. However, by
adhering to the following advice, these can
normally be avoided.
• Avoid direct contact with the cooling-lubricant.
• Turn off the flow of cooling-lubricant when
changing tools or when stopping to take
measurements.
• Wear oil-proof protective clothing such as
apron or gloves. Make sure that the insides
of the gloves are clean.
• Rub barrier cream on the hands and forearms
before starting work and after work-breaks.
Suitable barrier creams are available form
specialist suppliers.
• Always wash your hands before meals as well as
before and after visits to the toilet.
• Use clean towels. Do not used shared towels.
• NEVER wash your hands in cooling-lubricant
emulsions or in solvents.
• Change any working clothes or article of
underclothing that have been soiled by oil.
• Never put oily cleaning rags into your trouser
pockets.
• Never allow cooling-lubricant to come into
contact with the eyes or with the inside of
the mouth or nostrils.
• When dealing directly with the cooling-lubricant, roll
up the sleeves of your working clothes. This way
you prevent chafing of the skin.
• When the work shift is over clean all parts of the
body that have come into contact with cooling-
lubricant. Use warm water and a mild, non-
abrasive washing agent. Afterwards, rub a skin
care cream into the skin.
• Make sure that even small cuts or grazes are dealt
with
immediately
