5.1  Declaration of conformity

5.1.1  Servo actuators

The Harmonic Drive

®

 Servo Actuators described here conform to the Low Voltage Directive. According to the Machinery 

Directive, Harmonic Drive

®

 Servo Actuators are electrical equipment for use within certain voltage limits according to 

the Low Voltage Directive and are therefore excluded from the scope of the Machinery Directive. Commissioning is 
prohibited until the conformity of the end product with the Machinery Directive has been established. 

In terms of the EMC Directive, Harmonic Drive

®

 Servo Actuators are considered to be non critical equipment which 

neither cause nor are affected by electro magnetic interference. 
Conformity with the applicable EU directives of equipment, plant and machinery in which Harmonic Drive

®

 Servo 

Actuators are installed must be established by the user before commissioning. 

Equipment, installations and machines with inverter fed three phase motors must meet the protection requirements of 
the EMC Directive. The user is responsible for carrying out proper installation.

5.1.2  Integrated systems

According to the Machinery Directive, Harmonic Drive

®

 Integrated Systems such as the servo actuator IHD are partly 

completed machinery. The necessary documents (e.g. Declaration of Incorporation) are available and can be obtained 
on request. The integrated systems also conform to the EMC Directive.

6.  Mode of operation and structure

The Harmonic Drive

®

 Servo Actuators are permanent magnet three phase synchronous servo motors with integrated 

precision gearing, which operates according to the Harmonic Drive

®

 Principle. They are designed for operation with 

servo controllers (pulse inverters).
 
Due to the operating principle of the integrated Harmonic Drive

®

 Gear, a reversal of the direction of rotation takes place. 

This means that when the motor rotates internally clockwise, the output flange rotates counterclockwise. 
A reversal of the direction of rotation does not take place when using the FLA with planetary gear. 

A temperature sensor is integrated in the stator winding to protect against overtemperature. Monitoring of the 
temperature sensor must be switched on by the controller to ensure thermal protection of the motor. For more 
information, see chapter 

9.3 Overload protection.

 

The built in feedback system is used to detect the position and speed of the motor. The servo actuators can optionally 
be equipped with a holding brake.
