8. Functions
Rotating bezel:
The pilot bezel of a Guinand watch can be
rotated in both directions. Pilots who operate aircraft under
Visual Flight Rules can use the additional minute scale as a
navigation aid: on take-off the bezel is set in the way that the
zero point is aligned with the minute hand, in this way the be-
zel counts the flight minutes.
If, for example, the planned route includes certain landmarks
after 15 minutes of change of direction, you can watch on the
bezel when it is time to keep a lookout for the respective land-
mark. A chronograph cannot effectively perform this function
as the mostly small minute totaliser is much harder to read
than the central hand of a pilot watch.
This stopwatch function of up to 60 minutes also makes sense
for non-aviation applications.
