Spindle Bearing
Break-In
Inspections &
Adjustments
The following adjustments were performed at the
factory before the machine was shipped:
•
Gib Adjustments .............................

•

•

Pay careful attention to these adjustments when
first operating the machine. If you find that adjust-
ments are not set to your personal preference,
re-adjust them as desired.
The spindle break-in procedure distributes lubri-
cation throughout the bearings to reduce the risk
of early bearing failure if there are any "dry" spots
or areas where lubrication has settled in the bear-
ings. You
must complete this procedure before
placing operational loads on the spindle for the
first time when the machine is new or if it has
been sitting idle for longer than 6 months.
Always start the spindle break-in at the lowest
speed to minimize wear if there are dry spots.
Allow the spindle to run long enough to warm up
and distribute the bearing grease, then incremen-
tally increase spindle speeds and repeat this pro-
cess at each speed until reaching the maximum
spindle speed. Following the break-in procedure
in this progressive manner helps minimize any
potential wear that could occur before lubrication
is fully distributed.
You must complete this procedure to main-
tain the warranty. Failure to do this could
cause rapid wear-and-tear of spindle bear-
ings once they are placed under load.
After completing the spindle break-in procedure,
we recommend changing the headstock oil to
flush any small particles that may be present in
the headstock from the manufacturing process.
Refer to the
Lubrication section on Page 33 for
detailed instructions.
To perform spindle break-in procedure:
1. Turn spindle speed range knob to L (Low).
2. Turn Tap/Drill switch to Drill.
3. Use variable-speed dial to set spindle speed
to 100 RPM (refer to
Setting Spindle Speed
on
Page 25 for detailed instructions). Run
for 10 minutes in forward direction, then stop
spindle and run in reverse for 10 minutes.
4. Repeat Step 3 at 500 RPM.
5. Set spindle speed range knob to H (High).
6. Repeat Step 3 at spindle speeds of 1000
RPM and 2300 RPM. Run for a minimum of
5 minutes in each direction of rotation.
7. Change headstock oil while it is still warm
(refer to
Lubrication on Page 34 for detailed
instructions). Changing the headstock oil now
ensures you start operation with clean head-
stock oil, and it will help flush out any resid-
ual particles left over from the manufacturing
process.
The spindle break-in of the machine is now
complete!
