12.0 MAINTENANCE
WHEN CARRYING OUT ANY MAINTENANCE WHATSOEVER, PLACE A NOTICE ON THE MACHINE
WARNING THAT IT IS UNDERGOING MAINTENANCE
To keep the generating set in good working order in order to guarantee performance over the years, the maintenance
operations must be scrupulously carried out at the scheduled times. It is also a good rule to prepare a servicing chart on
which the hours of operation, work done, refuelling, maintenance and repair work done should be written; also the various
operations to be carried out should be programmed on the same chart (see enclosed facsimile). Routine and extraordinary
maintenance should only be carried out by qualified, trained personnel. The generating set must be kept clean. If necessary
clean with aqueous industrial products; do not use inflammable solvents for this purpose.
Any parts, components, spare parts that need replacing must absolutely comply with the bill of materials that
Geko
has
enclosed with this manual.
ONLY THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN IN CHAP. 12.0 OF THIS MANUAL SHOULD BE REFERRED TO FOR
THE PURPOSE OF CORRECT MAINTENANCE. FOR WHATEVER IS NOT EXPRESSLY REFERRED TO AND/OR
NOT SCHEDULED, BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH ANY OPERATIONS, IT IS ADVISABLE TO CONTACT THE
Geko
TECHNICAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT.
Geko
CANNOT BE HELD LIABLE ACCORDING TO THE LAWS IN FORCE, FOR UNAUTHORISED
INCORRECT ACTIONS WHICH COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THINGS AND INJURY TO PERSONS.
ALL MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS, EXCEPT REFUELLING AND BATTERY CHECKS, MUST BE
CARRIED OUT WITH THE GENERATOR OPERATION SWITCH IN THE POSITION O - “LOCKED” (IN THE
GENERATING SETS THAT HAVE THIS MODE).
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE ABOVE SHALL IMMEDIATELY RENDER THE WARRANTY NULL AND VOID.
12.1 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
Routine maintenance depends on the applications of the generating set. Engine maintenance, described in the engine
handbook, must be looked at together with this section of the manual: it should be noted that the maintenance time intervals
for the engine are much more frequent.
12.2 DIESEL ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Following instructions in the engine handbook, carry out maintenance being particularly careful of replacing the filtering
cartridges (oil, fuel oil) and cleaning the air filter. When used in dusty places (e.g. building sites, quarries, etc.) or in homes,
the actual engine must be cleaned particularly well, otherwise accumulated dust prevents irradiation of the heat produced
and anomalous heating of the engine. In these cases particular attention should also be paid to the air filter and precleaner,
which should be cleaned daily if necessary. With water-cooled engines, clean the radiator to prevent clogging of the air
passages which would result in less cooling efficiency.
The periodic controls to be carried out are as follows:
•
engine oil level (every 10-20 hours of operation)
•
fuel level (every 10-20 hours of operation)
•
with water-cooled engines, check the water level in the radiator daily and if necessary top up; it is advisable to
carry out this check when the engine is not very hot and it is also important to unscrew the radiator cap very
slowly and with maximum caution.
•
air filter clogging indicator (every 10 hours)
•
fan belt tension (every 20 hours)
•
periodically check the brushes and the starter and dynamo manifold/commutator. The brushes must be clean and
move freely in the relative brushholders; the sliding surface on the manifold/commutator must be cleaned with a
cloth soaked in petrol; the pressure springs must be efficient.
