8.5 COOLING AND FORCED AND ENVIRONMENTAL VENTILATION
The alternator, engine and exhaust pipes irradiate heat, which may be at a sufficiently high temperature to have a negative
effect on the running of the actual generating set. It is therefore very important to make sure that the room is adequately
ventilated to create the conditions for perfect cooling of the diesel engine and also to ensure an appropriate temperature for
service personnel.
Natural air circulation through apertures must necessarily take into account the following rules :
the aperture for incoming and outgoing air must be one and a half times wider and longer than the radiator area
the apertures must be fitted with grilles to protect from the rain and animals
the air inlet must be far from heat sources (engine, pipes,.....)
the outlet must be near the hottest areas.
The grilles must be securely fixed and, only in special circumstances (very cold climates) should air intakes with dampers
be fitted so that when the generator is in stand-by they can be closed to keep the environment warm enough not to have
problems with starting the machine. When the generating set is started up, the dampers must be opened immediately.
THE ENGINE COOLING AIR MUST BE CONVEYED OUTSIDE THE ROOM
