Mounting of the shaft sleeve
Applicable for flushed mechanical seal, quench.
Fig. 16: Detail shaft sleeve
Note direction of lip seal 0421.06.
Use the shaft sleeve 0524.01 only in the event of repair.
Using the shaft sleeve
The shaft sleeve is used to alleviate wear on the pump shaft and
allows for a shaft repair using the original seal size.
The kit for mounting a shaft sleeve includes
– 1 x shaft sleeve
– 1 x assembly sleeve.
You need these tools
– extended assembly sleeve or tube fitting
– hammer, wire cutter, and, when necessary, filler and sand-
paper.
How to mount the shaft sleeve
1. Clean the surface of the pump shaft and remove any burrs.
2. Measure the shaft diameter in two or three undamaged areas
of the shaft near the point of wear.
If these correspond to the average diameter of the shaft sleeve, a
tight fit of the sleeve is ensured.
3. Mark the seat of the shaft sleeve on the shaft.
4. If the sealing lip has worn a groove in the shaft, smooth out the
groove with an epoxy-type filler.
Caution: Pull the shaft sleeve onto the shaft before the filler hard-
ens!
5. Drive the shaft sleeve with regular blows against the closed
end of the assembly sleeve to the marked spot.
6. If the length of the assembly sleeve is not adequate, use a
suitable piece of pipe.
7. If the collar of the shaft sleeve must be removed for reasons of
space, remove it with a wire cutter along the desired tear line.
8. Inspect the shaft for burrs and remove them all.
9. Grease the surface slightly and attach the seal (see operating
manual).
Caution: Use a grease that is compatible with the seal elastomer!

shaft.

How to remove the shaft sleeve
If necessary, you can remove the shaft sleeve from the shaft
again in several ways.
– By heating the sleeve it can usually be easily pulled from the
shaft.
– The shaft sleeve collar can easily be torn off along the tear
line by means of a sudden jerk with a wire cutter.
– By light hammer blows with the thin side of the hammer, the
width of the sleeve will be expanded and the sleeve can be
easily removed.
DANGER
Disregarding important instructions!
▲
Death, serious bodily injury, damage to prop-
erty.
►
Before you assemble or do maintenance
work on the pump, note section
6.1
Safety
instructions for installation, inspection and
maintenance work
on page 18.
CAUTION!
Important!
▲
Damage to property.
►
Use tools from the HILGE assembly tool kit in
order to assemble the pump without damage
or scratches.
►
To ensure a good sealing, use only O-ring
seals with the original dimensions.
►
Never use grease containing mineral oil
when assembling the wet-end parts. Wet-end
parts come into contact with the pumped liquid.
►
When replacing mechanical seals, always
replace all parts.
►
To tighten impeller nut 0922.00, use either a
screw device or the impeller nut installing
device as the torque applied to tighten it must
be absolutely concentric. Otherwise the
pump shaft 0211.00 will be bent.
►
Check all removed parts for damage and
wear; replace if necessary. Install only fault-
free clean parts. Prior to assembly, clean the
installation space and contact surfaces.
